Top. Men. Investigating After Pilots Report Sighting “Man in jet pack”At 3,000 Feet

As if things aren’t weird enough.

The FBI is now involved after an American Airlines pilot claims he saw a man in a jet pack on Sunday night while he was on final approach near Los Angeles International Airport, according to the LA Times. The flight was American Airlines Flight 1997 from Philadelphia.

“Tower, American 1997. We just passed a guy in a jet pack,” the pilot is heard telling the tower at LAX.

The tower responded:

“American 1997, OK, thank you. Were they off to your left or right side?”

The pilot responded:

“Off the left side, maybe 300 yards or so, about our altitude.”

A second pilot from a Jet Blue flight also confirmed seeing the person: “We just saw the guy pass us by in the jet pack.”

“Only in L.A.,” the tower muttered

Seth Young, a pilot and a professor of aviation at Ohio State University, told the NY Times: “The risk is obviously having a collision with that airplane or getting a drone, or the person getting ingested into an engine. We have these issues with birds flying within congested airspace, as well.”

FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said:

“The FBI is aware of the reports by pilots on Sunday and is working to determine what occurred.”

The agency confirmed on Tuesday that it was now involved in an investigation.

  1. That’s beyond stupid. I’d wager the ability of a man in a jetpack to handle wake turbulence coming off a heavy to be approximately…. zip.

  2. Is there even a known “jetpack” that can do that?

I’d put my money on it being a drone or something that’s just rigged to look like a jetpack, because other than some other than some of the more elaborate wingsuits that look nothing like a guy with a jetpack, I can’t think of anything that could get into that part of the sky.

Or, am I just ignorant of the latest tech in this area?

      • It ain’t 3,000 above ground level and making yourself a nuisance to landing commercial aircraft amazing.

If this was a real thing, there’s a body somewhere around that airport. I will continue to lay money on something like “drone rigged to resemble man w/jetpack” before I think some idiot has managed to build something that could do that, and then waste it playing fuck-fuck games with the FAA. I mean, seriously… If you want attention, there are tons of better ways to get it than being sucked into a jet intake and being proximate cause for a major crash.

There are, however, enough crazy people out there that I might be wrong. This is, after all, 2020. If the space aliens bring back Elvis for a huge Las Vegas concert, I would not even blink. Not after the year so far…

  3. Cue George Costanza: Was that wrong? If anyone had told me that was inappropriate behavior, I assure you, I would not have done it.
