My rule of thumb on church arson is that the church was burned down by a church member, most likely the pastor or someone on the board.

It’s like being the husband of a woman who gets murdered. The rule of thumb is that you did it.
More often than not, it’s a play for an insurance check. If I were the 5-0 on this case, I’d be asking who had the legal and moral authority at the church to spend the insurance money and start my investigation there.
Publicity is probably the second most-common motive, and since these guys have been in the news lately, I’d be giving that a good hard look.
