Serial number 3 of the 1910 prototype. Browning kept this one for himself. I guess he didn’t think the thumb safety was needed.

  1. On some guns of the era, there was no thumb safety, only a grip safety. And the grip safety does a good job of keeping the gun safe from unintentional discharge by fat-fingering the trigger.

    But even then, one shouldn’t assume that this is the one that JMB “wanted” – because gunsmiths are willing to accept less, because they’ll “get around to” fixing something. So some of the guns in a gunsmith’s collection are like the shoes of a cobbler.
