Colt New Service Fitz Special

A rare treat. Above is a real Fitz special. The gun is a Colt New Service Fritz Special. One of only 21 made and maybe the first one made dating back to 1930.

John Henry Fitz Gerald was a Colt employee that had a lot of impact on the shooting world. A champion pistol shot, he also developed the Colt Police Silhouette Target and did a lot of work to develop pistol training for police and the military. He was one of the first to promote shooting with two hands with a pistol. Several noted personalities of the gun world in his day were users of the Fitz special. Col. Charles Askins being one of them. We will talk more about Charlie Askins next week.

Applegate himself carried a New Service Fitz Special with ivory handles that was even engraved with “TO REX FROM FITZ.” Askins called his .45 Colt New Service Fitz Special “The grandest defense gun I have ever had.” The Fitz Special would go on to become a popular after-market conversion for many gunsmiths.
