75th Anniversary of Iwo Jima

Today is the 75th anniversary of the start of the battle of Iwo Jima. Above Marines land on the beach in a photo I have never seen before.

Rock Island Auction marked the day with a great post on their instagram account. Below is a picture of the M1911 and “SECRET” marked map of Iwo Jima owned by USMC Sgt. Arthur J. Kiely who photographed and fought throughout the campaign. It’s going up for auction this April.

If you want to read about one of the rifles used by the Japanese, I wrote about a Type 99 last year.

  1. What isn’t appreciated enough by the US public is how the Marines ended up dealing with the majority of the Japanese troops on Iwo Jima. Seal them in their caves and starve them for air.

It was that simple, brutal, savage and… effective. I’m sure today, there would be all manner of caterwauling from JAG lawyers, human rights activists, politicians and news commentators about such brutal tactics.
